Orbit One is an OEM, i.e. it assembles end-user products, where PCBs are an important component in production. Orbit One has 150 employees and a turnover of SEK 160 million.

Problem
NCAB received artwork for a PCB, where the customer had experienced problems with short-circuiting during soldering. The customer tried to solve the problem earlier via another supplier but failed to achieve the desired result.

Analysis
Through analysis of the layout and careful checking using Genesis 2000, oversized openings in the soldering mask were discovered. It was also found that auto routing had brought conductors far too close to the SMD and HMT pads. The result was frequent short-circuiting during soldering. There were also definite problems with mounting the PCB.

Solution
NCAB’s technicians repeat the CAD process on parts of the PCB in order to produce artwork tailored to the customer’s production process. The result is that the customer avoids repair work and rejections.

Artwork before modifications:
the insulation gap between conductor and mask opening is just 0.024 mm, which means an opening at each conductor, which then causes short-circuiting during soldering.

Artwork after modifications:
Soldering mask and width of conductor have been reduced, and the insulation gap between the conductors has increased to 0.17 mm.

”The way NCAB approached and solved the problem we found highly professional. In three hours, I received the documentation I needed - in the form of pictures of the most exposed locations - for the argument to persuade our client that “cleaning up” the artwork was financially justifiable. After an intensive 3-week period of failed attempts at modification via another supplier, we asked NCAB to examine the artwork to ensure reproducibility, which they succeeded with.”
